Letter from the Director:

When brainstorming what our theme should be for this year’s report, the staff chose ‘Why we do what we do.” Every day we hear, “How can you do what you do?” or “I couldn’t do what you do.” In order to “do what we do,” there must be a real commitment to the cause. The staff at the Parent Enhancement Program are some of the best you could ever work with—their commitment is real and very evident every day. Other traits are also evident—compassion, experience, caring, empathy, kindness, creativity, and a special passion that is so very important. I thank Kathy, Amanda, Bre, Karen and Angee for bringing that passion to the families of our small agency every day.

And where do we impart that passion? With the amazing parents and children associated with the Parent Enhancement Program. Think about it—if you want to practice law, drive a car, or even cut someone’s hair; you are generally required to do some reading, take a class and pass a test. If you take on the hardest job there is—parenthood—there is no education, training or experience necessary. Add to this mix the other issues facing our parents, such as drug/alcohol abuse, domestic violence, being a teen, mental health issues, lack of life skills, homelessness, lack of education, or other challenges. Our staff understands that if parents perceive their children as a burden, this will add to their already stressed lives, which could lead to issues such as abuse, maltreatment or neglect.

The majority of our families are in a dismal situation, and connection with the Parent Enhancement Program staff and activities gives them a chance to change their lives and the lives of their children. Ninety-eight percent of the young parents out there care deeply about their children and want the best for them. When we show them a better way, it is amazing to watch the growth!

During this wonderful time of year, I wish this kind of growth for the young parents and their children served through this great organization—Parent Enhancement Program.

Thanks!

The Parent Enhancement Program (PEP) is a private nonprofit agency working to prevent child abuse and maltreatment by providing services to teen and at-risk young parents. In partnership with you, PEP can make a positive difference in the lives of young parents and help change the future for their children. We depend on your generosity!

The Parent Enhancement Program gratefully acknowledges the generous contributions by its caring supporters in 2007.
